Arabic Class: Understanding Modern Arabic (ARB 110)

The Islamic Organization of the Southern Tier will be holding an Arabic class for its members. The class will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The course will run from September 15, 2016 until the end of the academic year of 2016-2017 (May, 2017). Please see below for more details.

Overview: The purpose of this class is to teach students basic conversational Arabic. Students will learn the basics of the language, along with learning how to understand conversations, read newspapers, and listen to Arabic media. We will cover many different sources and texts, and will focus less on grammar, and more on word usage. This course is geared for those who know little to no Arabic and wish to learn more.

Timings/Dates: This class will run for 33 weeks, with two terms and a short winter break in between. Classes will be held from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. There will be a break for prayers if needed. Classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays, and will start on Thursday, September 15, 2016. Classes will end on May 25, 2017.

The dates and timings are not set in stone and may change. If they do, a notice will be sent out to all students and posted here.

Instructor: The main instructor for this class is our Ustadh Ahmad Alkhabbas Abu Khaleel. Currently a PhD candidate at Binghamton University studying comparative literature, Ustadh Abu Khaleel has taught language in Jordan and is profound in Arabic language, grammar, and historical texts. He lives in Johnson City with his wife and two children.

Fees: There are no fees for this class. This class is free to attend.

Registration: There is no registration required. If you wish to come, you are welcome to come to any class. However, we ask that if you are coming, you come consistently and diligently.

Who: This class is open to all brothers and sisters, ages 13 and up.

Additional Information: We will be using two main textbooks for this class. The first and main textbook of this class is titled, “Al Tareeqh Al Asriyyah” by Shaykh Abdul Razzaq Sikandar. The second book is TBD.
